Brian Franco-Winn is a dancer, choreographer, and educator whose work reaches across
a variety of dance perspectives. His current research interests are rooted in the
intersections of gender, sexuality, and dance where he continues to draw upon his
lived experiences in addition to his research endeavors to work toward a more inclusive
and diverse representation of the world in concert dance. Spending much of his career
in public education, Brian has taught in the Carolinas for over a decade. He was on
the dance faculty at Andrew Jackson High School, Wando High School, and Northwest
School of the Arts where he focused on technique classes and choreography and his
work was featured throughout the local communities. At UNCG, Brian taught courses
as a Graduate Teaching Associate in the School of Dance and received a Graduate Teaching
Fellowship through which he designed and taught Gender, Sexuality, and the Dancing
Body in the Residential College. He has also taught on the faculty at Kennesaw State
University in Kennesaw, GA, focusing on lecture courses in dance.
Brian has danced with Plexus Dance and Caroline Calouche & Company in Charlotte, NC
where he performed and taught contemporary and aerial dance for the company. He has
performed works by Martha Graham, B.J. Sullivan, Janet Lilly, Meg Schriffen, Stacey
McConnell, Michael James, Jennifer House Hinshaw, Amelia Binford, and Mary Beth Young.
Brian is an avid choreographer, clinician, and adjudicator within the pageantry arts community. He is the director of Etude, a performing arts organization under the Carolina Arts Collective. He is a choreographer and designer for organizations in the Southeast such as Carolina Crown, Tampa Independent, and Wando High School. Brian sits on the Advisory Boards for both the Carolina Winter Ensemble Association and Winter Guard International.
Brian received his M.F.A in Choreography from the University of North Carolina Greensboro and B.A. in Dance Education from Winthrop University. Brian is thrilled to be returning to Winthrop as an Assistant Professor of Dance.
