Dr. Tracy Patterson serves as professor of music, woodwind area coordinator, and program coordinator for Commercial Music at Winthrop University where he directs the Commercial (Break) Music Ensemble and Swingin' Eagles Jazz Ensemble. He also teaches courses in American popular music and saxophone lessons. He is distinguished as a D'Addario and Yamaha Performing Artist and exclusively plays D'Addario reeds and Yamaha saxophones.
Patterson has performed with noted artists Natalie Cole, The Temptations, Brett Eldridge, and Darius Rucker. An active orchestral musician, he has appeared with the Charlotte Symphony Orchestra, the Oklahoma City Philharmonic, and the Lubbock Symphony Orchestra. He made his Carnegie Hall debut in 2017 with the Winthrop University Wind Symphony, performing Leonard Mark Lewis' Concerto for Alto Saxophone and Wind Band at the New York Sounds of Spring International Music Festival. Patterson has been a guest soloist at the Charlotte Jazz Festival, the University of North Carolina at Charlotte Jazz Festival, the South Carolina Dizzy Gillespie Jazz Festival, the Simpson College Jazz Festival, and the Redbud Jazz Festival at Northern Oklahoma College.
Patterson has presented performances, masterclasses, and lectures at several conferences including those hosted by the North American Saxophone Alliance, Music Teachers National Association, Texas Music Educators Association, International Saxophone Symposium, North Carolina Music Educators Association, and the South Carolina Music Educators Association.
