You are a listener. You dream of leading choirs, conducting orchestras, teaching students, or composing your own works. Learn music theory, aural skills, arranging, music technology and more. A like-minded group of faculty, students, and staff with a shared passion for all aspects of music, Winthrop’s Department of Music provides supportive mentoring to foster your development as a musician and to prepare you for a career in music. Winthrop offers four undergraduate and three graduate music degree programs, including a Bachelor of Arts degree in music with a concentration in music technology. Courses cover fundamentals of music technology, audio recording/post-production, synthesis/signal processing, and audio for visual media. 

 

ABOUT THE PROGRAM

The Music minor is an 20-hour program.

Our music programs are accredited nationally by the National Association of Schools of Music (since 1940), the National Council on Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE), and the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS).

It is the purpose of the minor in Music to provide students with a general music education within a liberal arts setting. Students will acquire and expand their knowledge of musicianship and performance which serve to develop their creative and musical potentials.

OUR music FACULTY

Our theatre faculty is dedicated to developing relationships with each of our students. Nearly 95 percent of the full-time music faculty hold the highest degree possible in their teaching specialty and perform professionally outside of the university and across the region.

The minor in music consists of 20 semester hours of music courses (MUSA and MUST):

  • MUST 111 (3) Music Theory I 

  • MUST 112 (3) Music Theory II 

  • MUST 113 (1) Aural Skills I 

  • MUST 114 (1) Aural Skills II  (111 and 113 are to be taken together; 112 and 114 together) 

  • MUST 305 (3) History of Music to 1750 

  • MUST 306 (3) History of Music from 1750-1900 

  • 2 semesters (2 credits) of major ensemble credit (MUSA 151, 152, 156, 157 or 161)  

  • 4 semesters (4 credits) of private instruction in one instrument 

Music minors must demonstrate a proficiency in an an instrument or voice. Potential music minors must schedule a meeting with the Chair of the Department of Music prior to declaring a minor in music.
