I am writing with some unfortunate news. As you know, Winthrop is a historic campus, with beautiful buildings, many of which are over 100 years old. As such, the university is navigating maintaining and updating buildings and infrastructure for our modern needs. Throughout the school year, the campus, but particularly the arts areas, which are located in historic buildings, have been struggling with heating/cooling. Recently, the AC repairs needed to maintain a safe campus have reached a critical point, and the university needs to respond immediately to make sure that repairs are done in time for the fall semester. To accomplish this, the entire campus will be without AC at critical points throughout the next two months, the week of the summer dance intensive being one of them. I can’t apologize enough, but it is not safe to run a dance program in the heat of summer without air conditioning, so we are forced to cancel the intensive for this year.
You will all, of course, receive a full refund, and we will be offering half price tuition for all of you that can attend next summer. In addition, we are offering two complimentary tickets to our three dance concerts this year: Winthrop Dance Theatre (Nov. 8-10), Senior Dance Showcase (Nov. 22-24), and Spring Dance Showcase (April 25-27). We know that this will not make up for the inconvenience or the disappointment, but we hope that it allows you to still be able to experience some of what Winthrop has to offer, and be able to come to campus for next summer’s intensive. The good news is, Winthrop is taking the needed steps to make sure that work is being completed immediately so that we can plan for the future. All of our dance studios are getting beautiful new floors this summer, and with new AC for the campus, we can relaunch our summer intensive in updated spaces! We will also be offering on campus housing for the first time next summer, so we can accommodate students from outside Rock Hill. With all of these improvements, we can plan an amazing experience for all of you next summer!
Again, we know this is disappointing, and we do apologize, but these are circumstances out of our control. Please don’t hesitate to reach out if you have any questions. We hope to see you at dance events on campus this year and wish you the best for the rest of your summer.

This one-week intensive for rising 9th graders through graduating high school seniors features a variety of technique classes taught by Winthrop dance faculty.
Classes will be held in the Johnson Hall dance studios from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. daily.
Students will perform in an informal showing on Friday.
Friends and family are welcome to attend.
*Winthrop University does not provide on-campus housing, so you will be responsible for your own housing accommodations during this time.
To register, fill out the registration form here. There is a $250 fee for early bird registration before May 26, 2024 after that, the cost for attending is $275. Payment may be completed online through the marketplace here or by check made payable to Winthrop University and mailed to Department of Theatre and Dance, Attn: Summer Dance Intensive, 115 Johnson Hall, 29733. The Assumption of Risk Form, and Medical Form should be completed and signed by a parent/guardian prior to participation in the intensive. We must recieve your submitted registration form, payment, the assumption of risk form, and medical form for you to attend the program. Thank you!
