ABOUT THE PROGRAM

INVITATIONAL BAND CLINIC

Two and a half days of activities will take place for participating students. The Invitational Band Clinic is free and requires band director recommendation.

Including:
•Part and chair auditions
•IBC Opening Ceremony (this is an event where participating students will receive their schedule and all important information regarding  the remainder of the clinic)
•Full ensemble rehearsals with expert clinicians
•Master classes with Winthrop University faculty
•Performances by Winthrop University ensembles
•Scholarship auditions for those interested
•Performances by the clinic bands.

    Thursday, November 16, 4 p.m.- 10 p.m. (Auditions and Opening Ceremonies, Concert by WU Wind Symphony)

    Friday, November 17, 8 a.m. – 7:30 p.m. (Band rehearsals, Masterclasses)

    Saturday, November 18, 8 a.m. – 5 p.m. (Band rehearsals and Invitational Bands CONCERT)

    Two bands of high school performers will be assembled as the clinic performance ensembles. Students will be selected from a list of director nominations. Directors will submit each student individually, beginning with their BEST musician, then submit their NEXT best musician, and so on. 

     

    Please access this site until Tuesday, October 3, 2023 at which point nominations will close. Directors will be notified of decisions regarding student selection during the week of October 9. If you have any problems with the online form, please contact us.

    Two and a half days of activities will take place for participating students, including part and chair auditions, IBC Opening Ceremony (this is an event where participating students will receive their schedule and all important information regarding  the remainder of the clinic), full ensemble rehearsals with expert clinicians, master classes with Winthrop University faculty, performances by Winthrop University ensembles, scholarship auditions for those interested, and performances by the clinic bands. NOTE: Students should apply only if they can fulfill the responsibilities of the entire Invitational Clinic, including audition, opening ceremony, rehearsals, and concerts. Students will not be excused for activities outside of the clinic. The Invitational Band Clinic is free and requires band director recommendation.

    Guest conductors will provide professional development sessions during the clinic. These sessions are designed for, and are open to, all band directors.

    Parking passes will be given out free of charge at the WU IBC Opening Ceremony.

    Each student will be auditioned for chair and part placement by the Winthrop University faculty. Students are to prepare a short etude or an excerpt from a solo. Sight-reading and scales may be a part of the audition. Percussionists will sight-read only and should be prepared to play timpani, mallets, and snare drum.

    Will be held on Saturday morning, November 18. Interested Seniors are to fill out an application and read the audition requirements no later than Thursday, November 9 to arrange an audition time.

    Clinic Informational meeting for ALL participants and Directors in McBryde Hall following band auditions.

    Directors will need to make housing arrangements for themselves and their students. Band directors are responsible for securing and supervising student lodging. 

    Available on campus and within walking distance from campus. 

    The culminating activity for students, directors, and the public will be a FREE concert on Saturday afternoon at 3 p.m. in Lois Rhame West Health, Physical Education, and Wellness Center on the Winthrop University campus.
