ST-ARTS 2024 faqs

*Questions about bus transportation should be directed to your district.

Day One, 2024 Information:

  • Whether you are bused to campus or brought by a parent, all students will meet at Tillman Auditorium on the Winthrop Campus at 8:30AM. Parents are welcome to join us.
  • At that time, each student will receive their class schedule, learn their minor area of study, and dismissed with their teacher to attend their 9AM class. Once students are dismissed, our office staff will be available to answer any questions by parents. 
  • Pick-up location for all non-bused students will be at their MINOR arts area. This is every day of the program. Our transportation map will show you each arts area pick-up/drop-off location. 
  • Drop-off starting the second day, June 11th through the rest of the program will be at their MAJOR arts area.
  • Our designated STARTS phone line will be actively monitored the week prior to the program through the final day of participation (803-323-3965).

    June 10 - 28, 2024 (weekdays only)

    ST-ARTS hours run 9:00 am to 3:30 pm. On the final Friday, students are released by 12:00 pm.

    Yes! Bring your instrument with you on Day One.

    On Day 1, ALL students will be dropped off at Tillman Hall and picked up at their appropriate arts minor area. Students receive their schedules at Tillman Hall on day one.

    • For the remainder of the program, students will be dropped off at their major arts area and picked up at their minor arts area (see our MAP for specific locations)

      • Music will be held in the Conservatory of Music

      • Visual Art will be held in Rutledge Hall

      • Dance and Drama will be held in Johnson Hall

     Morning classes begin promptly at 9:00, and students will not be supervised before 8:30 AM. Please be sure your student arrives between 8:30 and 9:00 AM.  Afternoon queues for pick-up begin at 3pm as classes end at 3:30 pm.

    ST-ARTS operates just like public schools, and safety on campus is a priority! Students are not to be dropped off unaccompanied, as they will need to be checked in with their area coordinator. Please accompany your child into their arts building and speak with the ST-ARTS staff to check them in. If you are picking your child up early, please follow the same procedure and enter the building to speak with ST-ARTS staff and check your child out of class. Just as in a public school, you will be asked to provide identification to verify that an approved person is picking up the student. We also ask that if you know about an absence or early dismissal in advance, please send a note with your child.

    Students should dress appropriately for the summer weather. Shorts that are fingertip length when the arms are at the sides are permitted. Spaghetti straps or strapless tops are not permitted. Dance students should wear appropriate dance attire. Any questions regarding dance dress code can be directed to the Dance Coordinator, Stacy McConnell. 

     Yes. There will be a final showcase on the last day of the program. More information will be available on the final week of the program. 

    Students should plan on bringing their lunch as meals are currently not supplied by ST-ARTS. Since students move class to class throughout the day, they will carry their lunch with them until lunch break. There are no areas available for refrigeration or heating up meals.

The ST-ARTS program has been running for over 30 years! For many students in the area surrounding Winthrop University, studying the arts has become more than just an activity in their free time. Since its inception in 1989, Winthrop has hosted more than 9,000 students for the annual ST-ARTS (Students with Special Talents in the Arts) program. This program connects middle school-aged students with more than 50 talented artists and musicians and allows them to intensively study a specific arts area. Arts areas include music, dance, design, drama and photography.

 


HOW TO PARTICIPATE?

To participate in the program, students from neighboring school districts in grades 6-8 apply and audition for the program. Nearly 300 students attend three weeks of music, dance, drama, design and photography classes on Winthrop’s campus each summer. Most importantly, scholarships are available with participating districts to students to cover tuition.

Summer ST-ARTS 2024 is open to non district-sponsored students!

Program tuition is $740 for all three weeks and is due once you have been accepted into the program. If you are interested in submitting an audition as a non-district sponsored participant, please submit an application form, and the required audition materials. 

*One scholarship for full tuition each discipline, (Music, Theatre, Dance, and Fine Arts) is available for non district-sponsored students!

ST-ARTS

The Program

ST-ARTS is a program sponsored by the Winthrop University College of Visual and Performing Arts.  They work in collaboration with participating districts from York and Lancaster counties to serve over 300 gifted and talented students in the arts grades 6 - 8 (rising 7th, 8th, and 9th graders during the June program).  Students convene on the Winthrop campus for its annual program. 

A professional faculty of over 45 artists and teachers in the four visual and performing arts (dance, music, drama, and visual arts) is drawn from a pool of nationally known performing artists, the SC Arts Commission Artists Roster, master teachers from public and private schools, and the Winthrop University faculty. This diverse faculty directs the students through a multi-faceted curriculum each weekday during the 3 week program.

The Opportunities

Students spend the day in a variety of instructional opportunities in their chosen arts area and take full advantage of the facilities on the Winthrop campus. The emphasis of the program is to guide the students through the process of conceptualizing and creating art. Curriculum is designed and evaluated in accordance with the South Carolina Visual and Performing Arts Frameworks. The program concept and curricular design have been cited by the State Department of Education as a model of how an institution of higher learning and a consortium of public schools can work in a cooperative venture to provide a comprehensive fine arts program for talented arts students within the local school districts.

Since its inception in 1989, the summer ST-ARTS Program has served over 5,000 middle school students. Many of our graduates have been selected to attend the Governor's School of the Arts in Greenville, and have gone on to continue their studies at major universities throughout the region.

Participation

Our students are currently selected and sponsored by participating school districts of York and Chester counties.  Since the inception of our summer program in 1989, our districts have completely subsidized tuition for their students. 

Winthrop ST-Arts program does not provide transportation. Some participating districts do provide busing.

ST-Arts has expanded the program to include students that are not affiliated with public school districts of York and Chester counties. Please see information below on non-district sponsored participation.

Online submissions

    • Prepare one piece to be sung or played. 

    • Submit home video recording of 3 - 5 minutes of performance

    • Sheet music (pdf) should be submitted with video

     

    In the video, each student needs to introduce themselves with the following information: 

    1. Name

    2. Current Grade

    3. Title of piece to be performed

    • Submit a 90 second home video of student performing dance movement of their choice (may be set choreography or improvisational).

    • Short paragraph on why interested in attending the ST-Arts Dance summer program. 

      • List any previous dance experience. (ex: public school dance program, summer camp, studio, types of dance: Irish, ballet, creative movement, tap, musical theatre, etc. *previous experience not required).

    Video samples and instructions for “I AM…” available through Dropbox.

    You may pick either option:
    1. Prepare a theatre piece - a lip sync, a song, a poem, a monologue, a creative piece only 60 - 90 seconds in length.

    -OR-

       2. Perform an “I AM” Poem. The structure is as follows.   

           Finish each statement by performing it:

    I AM......

    I See.......

    I hear....

    I smell.....

    I taste.....

    I feel.....

    I AM.....

    • Submit 5-10 photos of completed works of art 

    • Short essay or paragraph that describes your artistic interests and influences in art.

STUDENT TESTIMONIES

Winthrop’s ST-ARTS Program Impacts Local Students Passionate about the Arts!

For many, the impact of the program is much longer than just a summer. Some ST-ARTS students have gone on to attend Winthrop University after high school graduation. Hannah Hustad '16 attended the program for three years. In 2016, she starred as Elle Woods in the Department of Theatre’s production of “Legally Blonde: The Musical.”

“I’m proud to be a student at a school that hosts such a beneficial event,” Hustad said. “I don’t think I realized how important of an opportunity it was when I was younger. You grow so much as an artist and as a human being.”

After participating in the ST-ARTS program, many students continue to be involved as a volunteer. Im Chan ‘02 saw the benefits of the program and served as a volunteer after attending the program as a student. Chan now works as an art conservator in Washington, D.C.

“ST-ARTS was the first time I thought about art in a real way that could be studied and practiced,” Chan said. “I loved being able to work in real art studios at a university, which made it feel like so much more than just a hobby.”
