Winthrop’s largest building, the 137,000-square-foot Lois Rhame West Health, Physical Education and Wellness Center, debuted in August 2007. Named for a 1943 Winthrop alumna and former South Carolina First Lady, Lois West, the signature facility utilized the latest in environmentally friendly construction techniques. In addition to housing academic space for Winthrop’s College of Education, Sport, and Human Sciences, the building is the home for campus wellness facilities. The West Center boasts state-of-the-art equipment and spaces including a two-story climbing wall, four full-sized basketball courts, an elevated running track, an 8,000-square-foot weight room, a 25-yard swimming pool, and four racquetball courts.
