Dr. Bollinger has been on the faculty at Winthrop for more than 20 years. She formerly
served as the chair of the Department of Interdisciplinary Studies and as the Dalton Endowed Chair of Environmental Sciences and Studies.
The Department of Interdisciplinary Studies was new to Winthrop as of August 2011,
and Dr. Bollinger served as its department chair until 2021. The department brought
together interdisciplinary programs within the College of Arts & Sciences that did
not have a clear departmental home. These programs offer 10 minors and three majors
(Masters of Liberal Arts, B.S. in Environmental Sciences, and B.A. in Environmental Studies).
From 2002-2015, Bollinger served as the Dalton Endowed Chair of Environmental Sciences
and Studies. In academic year 2006-2007, she served as an American Association for
the Advancement of Science (Institutional Effectiveness) Science and Technology Policy
Fellow at the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), where she contributed to the administration
of the geosciences research program and monitored energy-water issues affecting DOE.
Bollinger spent many years within the Department of Chemistry, Physics, Geology and
the Environment where she taught a variety of geology courses such as physical geology,
environmental geology, oceanography, earth science for elementary education majors,
marine geology, and geochemistry. Her geology research interests relate to water and
sediment chemistry, particularly in coastal environments such as salt marshes and
estuaries.
