Nathaniel Frederick II serves as Department Chair and Associate Professor of Mass Communication.  He received his doctorate in Mass Communication and master’s in Media Studies from Pennsylvania State University and bachelor’s in Mass Communication from Claflin University. His teaching areas include media history; media law; media entrepreneurship; media literacy; and representations of minorities in media. 

 

Prior to joining Winthrop University's faculty in 2011, Dr. Frederick taught at Pennsylvania State University; PennWest California; and Claflin University. His research focuses on the intersection of media, cultural production, and social protest in the twentieth century. Dr. Frederick’s recent work has been published in refereed journals and edited volumes.  He is also the co-editor of Media Ethics at Work: True stories from Young Professionals 3rd ed. published by Great River Learning in 2021.  Dr. Frederick has presented research at national and international conferences. His research has been awarded by the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication (AEJMC) and the American Journalism Historians Association (AJHA). He was also awarded multiple fellowships from the Scripps Howard Foundation, including the Scripps Howard Leadership Academy in 2023. He was also selected as a 2023 AEJMC Institute for Diverse Leadership Fellow. 

 

Dr. Frederick served as Coordinator of the African American Studies Program from 2017-2021. He currently serves as adviser to the Winthrop University Association Black Journalists and the Roddey McMillan Record, Winthrop’s multicultural student newspaper.
