Faculty & Staff Profiles

Joseph Kasko has worked in broadcasting, both radio and television, for more than 15 years, where he has held positions as a host, news anchor, reporter, photographer, operations manager, news director, music director, and station manager. Previously, he worked for the NPR member station in South Bend, Ind. where he also filed stories for NPR and the network’s sports program Only A Game. In South Carolina, Kasko has reported for Media General’s capital bureau, ABC Columbia and the South Carolina Radio Network. He has also won numerous awards for his reporting, including a national Edward R. Murrow Award and he was recognized three times as Best Metro-Radio Reporter by the Indiana Associated Press.

Kasko has taught at the college level for more than 12 years, including stints at SUNY Buffalo State, the University of South Carolina, Benedict College in Columbia, S.C., and Ivy Tech Community College in South Bend, Ind. At Winthrop, he teaches courses on the introduction to mass communication, multimedia storytelling and production, convergent journalism, digital culture and society, and film production. He has also taught courses on media writing, talk radio, news reporting, and news producing.

Kasko is currently the faculty advisor and manager of Winthrop’s online student radio station Eagle Air. He has been involved in a leadership role at a number of college radio stations, including WSND-FM at the University of Notre Dame, WUSC-FM at the University of South Carolina and WBNY-FM at SUNY Buffalo State.
