Dr. Kohl is a graduate of Winthrop University, where she received her B.S. in Biology. She earned a Ph.D. in Genetics and Molecular Biology from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and completed postdoctoral research at North Carolina State University. As both a graduate student and a postdoctoral scholar, Dr. Kohl studied different aspects of meiotic recombination using the classic genetic model system, Drosophila melanogaster (the fruit fly). At Winthrop, Dr. Kohl investigates the genetic and molecular mechanisms of DNA repair through the study of Drosophilia mutagen-sensitivity genes.
