Dr. Schafer received her B.A. in Zoology (minor in Botany) from Miami University in Ohio. She earned a Ph.D. in Botany from the University of Florida. Her doctoral research focused on the effects of fire on nutrient availability and limitation in scrubby flatwoods ecosystems. Dr. Schafer completed postdoctoral research at Rutgers University-Newark (working in deserts in the southwestern US) and North Carolina State University (working in longleaf pine savannas). She was an assistant professor at William Jewell College for three years before coming to Winthrop in 2017.

The courses Dr. Schafer teaches at Winthrop include Principles of Ecology, Evolution, and Biodiversity, Ecology, and Scientific Process in Biology. Dr. Schafer conducts research on the effects of disturbance on individuals, populations, communities, and ecosystems.
