Dr. Stern is an associate professor in the Department of Biology and has been at Winthrop since 2013. He earned his B.S. from the University of Nebraska, his Ph.D. from the University of Iowa, and completed a postdoctoral fellowship at the Wake Forest Institute for Regenerative Medicine and Sticht Center on Aging. Dr. Stern became an instructor at Wake Forest and then spent 2.5 years as an assistant professor at the University of Missouri-Kansas City before coming to Winthrop.

The courses Dr. Stern has taught at Winthrop include Cell Biology, Molecular Biology, Stem Cell Biology, Scientific Process, and Recent Advances in Molecular and Cellular Biology as well as Special Topics and Readings courses.

Dr. Stern also leads an active research program of undergraduate and graduate students. The Stern lab's research includes efforts to understand how adipose-derived mesenchymal stem cells respond to a variety of three-dimensional culture systems. The goal of this work is to learn how to improve the efficiency with which the cells differentiate into lineages such as muscle and bone and to produce novel three-dimensional culture systems that facilitate the study of stem cell differentiation. Another line of research uses of melanoma cell lines as a model that allows students in the cell biology course to learn methods in cell biology and contribute to novel research related to cancer cell epigenetics.
