The Department of Human Nutrition is dedicated to providing quality educational experiences for students and preparing them to think critically; the programs prepare graduates with the knowledge and skills necessary to become leaders in the field of nutrition and dietetics. The undergraduate program in dietetics meets the academic requirements of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics (AND) Accreditation Council for Education in Nutrition and Dietetics (ACEND), which is a prerequisite for applying to accredited dietetic internships. Students completing the B.S. in Human Nutrition in dietetics receive a Didactic Program in Dietetics (DPD) Verification Statement required for dietetic internship applications. Students take courses in sciences including chemistry, human physiology, and microbiology. Student who choose the Nutrition and Health Promotion option can pursue careers in food service management, public health, and wellness as well as pursue a master's degree in public health or apply to programs such as medical school, physician assistant programs, physical therapy, etc.

Winthrop University has offered food and nutrition courses since 1887 and began dietetics education in 1917.

The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics is a national organization of more than 100,000 credentialed practitioners -- registered dietitian nutritionists, dietetic technicians registered, other dietetic professionals holding undergraduate and advanced degrees in nutrition and dietetics, and students -- committed to improving the health  and advancing the profession of dietetics through research, education and advocacy. Winthrop has continuously offered Academy-approved or accredited programs in nutrition and dietetics since 1973. The Department currently offers a BS in Human Nutrition option, which is an undergraduate Didactic Program in Dietetics (DPD), and a post-graduate dietetic internship. Both programs are accredited by the Accreditation Council for Education in Nutrition and Dietetics. The Department of Human Nutrition also offers an MS in Human Nutrition (100% online). Program outcomes data are available upon request.

In 2019 the Department of Human Nutrition started two new programs/options in the department. The first is the BS in Human Nutrition with a Nutrition and Health Promotion option. The second is the Medical Lactation Certificate program. Checkout both of these programs on our department website.
