Ways to Give
Giving to Winthrop is quick and easy. Below are integration-related scholarship funds
to which you may donate. Or, you can search for additional giving opportunities.
- Roddey, Johnson, Gladden, Meriwether Endowed Scholarship: This endowed scholarship fund was established by donors in honor of the 50th anniversary
of integration at Winthrop. Its name honors the four pioneering African-American women
who first integrated Winthrop: graduate student Cynthia Plair Roddey, the first African-American
student to register and begin classes; Delores Hurt Johnson and Arnetta Gladden, the
first two of three African-American undergraduate applicants admitted to enroll for
classes; and Sue Frances Meriwether Steed, the first African-American student to receive
a degree from Winthrop. The fund provides scholarships to Winthrop students who have
financial need; are South Carolina residents; exhibit academic achievement and leadership
on or beyond campus; and are of sophomore, junior, or senior standing, or enrolled
in graduate level coursework. First preference will be given to minority students.
- Ebonites Scholarship: This scholarship was established in 1975 by Winthrop alumni for the purpose of providing
scholarships for minority students. Scholarship funds will be awarded to the freshman,
sophomore, or junior member of the Association of Ebonites who has the highest cumulative
GPA and is an active, participating member.
- Adolphus Belk Jr. African American Studies Program Fund: The Adolphus Belk Jr. African American Studies Program supports the activities and
curriculum of the African American Studies Program, including the Dorothy Perry Thompson
Colloquium on The African American Experience.
- Black Alumni Council Scholarship Fund: This scholarship was established by the members of the Black Alumni Council (BAC)
at Winthrop University. The purpose of the fund is to provide annual scholarships
to Winthrop students who have at least a 3.0 GPA; financial need; are at least sophomore
standing; have not attended Winthrop full time for more than four years consecutively
prior to receiving the scholarship; and have a demonstrated commitment to leadership
and service. First preference is given to African-American students who meet the above
criteria.
- Dr. Cynthia P. Roddey Annual Scholarship Fund: This fund was established by the Xi Beta Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority,
Inc. and shall provide support to a student with a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5,
who demonstrates financial need and has participated in public service and campus
involvement; recipients shall be selected under the auspices of the Division of Student
Life and Fraternity and Sorority Affairs in conjunction with the Financial Aid Office.
