With more than a century of history, Winthrop University’s human nutrition program is the only program in South Carolina offering a bachelor’s in both dietetics and health promotion, an online master’s in human nutrition and a dietetic internship program. The faculty of the Department of Human Nutrition at Winthrop are devoted to innovative teaching practices to ensure that students are equipped to be leaders in the field of nutrition and dietetics. We embrace the many aspects of nutrition and dietetics such as foodservice management, sports nutrition, community nutrition, sustainable agricultural through our students driven community garden and food pantry, and medical nutrition therapy. Graduates from this program are sought after by local and regional employers due to their well-rounded educational background which is very hands on and skill development focused.

The mission of the Didactic Program in Dietetics is to prepare our graduates as future dietitians and nutrition professionals for supervised practice leading to eligibility for the Commission on Dietetic Registration (CDR) credentialing exam to become a registered dietitian nutritionist.
This option's ideal student is someone who likes studying food and nutrition but is not interested in a career in dietetics. This second major option was developed for students who are interested in working in the field of nutrition and its relation to disease prevention and health promotion. If you like nutrition education, food service management, nutrition and health, or public health nutrition, then this is an option for you. Graduates could pursue a career in the Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) program; work in USDA extension nutrition programs and initiatives; become a public health nutrition educator; or work as a food service supervisor or director. With the right course selections, students can also become certified dietary managers or certified health educators.
Ours is the only nutrition program in North and South Carolina with a "live" simulator.
Our students have an 80 percent acceptance rate into internships through DICAS on first application, with yearly employer requests for referrals.
