ROCK HILL, SOUTH CAROLINA -- With the holiday season quickly approaching, you can get your hands on unique, handmade ceramic pieces at the 30th Annual Pottery Sale at Winthrop University. This year’s sale will be Friday, Dec. 6, from noon to 6 p.m. in G-10 Rutledge Building.

Members of the Rock Hill and Winthrop communities mark their calendars each fall for the sale, which is held in conjunction with Rock Hill’s ChristmasVille event

This year’s showcase will feature work from 24 people, which includes professionals, alumni and current students.

The sale began in 1989 with just eight artists and has grown exponentially over the years.

“It’s hard to put a finger on why the sale has been popular for these past 30 years,” said Jim Connell, professor of fine arts and director of the pottery sale. “Word of mouth has spread, and people keep coming back. Traditionally the Southeast has a love of pottery, and that love is seen each year at the sale. And of course, it is the holiday buying season and everyone wants to buy pottery to give.”

Not only does the sale serve as a way for students to gain experience selling artwork, but also serves as a fundraiser for the Department of Fine Arts. Proceeds are put back into the department to purchase equipment and materials for the studios and classrooms.
