Winthrop University: News & Events - How to Use RSS News Feeds

How to Use RSS News Feeds

To subscribe to RSS ("Really Simple Syndication") feeds, you must use an RSS aggregator often called an RSS reader or news reader. An aggregator downloads content from other sites and then displays a list of headlines on your personalized webpage, or within a stand-alone software application. When you click one of the headlines, you're directed back to the site where the article originated, such as winthrop.edu/news. Most aggregators update your headline list automatically, so you're always shown the most recent content.

Available Feeds

Winthrop University publishes a Dacus Library feed. By clicking on the link below, you will be redirected to a service which will enable you to view the feed of your choice and to subscribe using your preferred RSS reader.

Two of the most popular free RSS services are offered by My Yahoo! and My MSN. They compile feeds from various Internet sources and list the articles on personalized web pages.

To add the Dacus Library feed to any of the online services, simply choose the feed at the top of the feed page and click the appropriate button. For example, if you're a My Yahoo! subscriber, click one of the  buttons ( News Feed Button Example (My Yahoo) ) to add a feed automatically.

Note: Winthrop University takes no responsibility for the content on external sites and cannot provide technical support for third-party RSS aggregation services or software.

Using stand-alone RSS software

If you use a stand-alone RSS reader, such as SharpReader or FeedDemon, there are two ways to subscribe to Winthrop's news feeds:

  • Click on the feed that you would like to subscribe to either above or in the "Subscribe" section of the News & Events menu. At the top of the feed page choose the RSS reader you prefer from the drop-down menu. If your reader is configured to accept feeds automatically, the feed should be added to your RSS reader's subscription list. If not, clicking "View Feed XML" will provide a page which will allow you to manually subscribe to the feed using your preferred software.
  • Copy and paste the feed URL(s) into your RSS reader's subscription field. This option is appropriate if your reader isn't configured to subscribe to feeds automatically.

Using Mozilla Firefox

If you use the Mozilla Firefox Web browser, you can subscribe to RSS feeds by clicking the RSS icon icon on any page where it appears. This will add a link for that particular feed to your browser's Bookmarks menu. Clicking the bookmark will display a list of available articles, which you can then access as you would any other bookmarked webpage.
