ROCK HILL, SOUTH CAROLINA – A new Winthrop University graduate that one faculty member called “a beloved friend and fearless leader” has tragically passed away.

Shannon Barber ’20, of Rock Hill, passed away on Tuesday, June 16. She was 39.

Barber earned her bachelor’s degree in political science and a minor in women’s and gender studies last month. She also held an associate’s degree in computer science from York Technical College.

“[Shannon] was a fierce and loyal friend and social justice warrior who has had a more powerful impact on the Winthrop University Political Science Department and all who knew her than just about anybody I can think of,” said Department of Political Science Chair Jennifer Leigh Disney.

Barber served as president of the Winthrop College Democrats for three years and as the vice president and membership director for the College Democrats of South Carolina. She was actively involved in coordinating several presidential candidates’ visits to Rock Hill, including Sens. Kamala Harris and Cory Booker. In addition to being a student, she worked as a writer for political publications.

Family, friends and mentors describe her as passionate and courageous, and someone who expanded others’ perspectives of the world.

An open visitation is scheduled for Sunday, June 21, from 2-7 p.m. at Robinson Funeral Home in Rock Hill. Social distancing will be observed, and a mask is required.

Her family plans to establish a scholarship fund in her name and honor.
