ROCK HILL, SOUTH CAROLINA – New internships and opportunities are now available to Winthrop University students, thanks to a local organization dedicated to making the city of Rock Hill a more diverse place to work.

A new partnership between the Black Economic Leadership League of Rock Hill (B.E.L.L.), the College of Business Administration and Access & Enrollment Management has resulted in:

*Two available internships for College of Business Administration students. The internships will involve helping B.E.L.L. plan and implement its next business competition (known as XPrize) and assisting the city in business development.

*Four internships with the Technology Incubator, working with winners from the XPrize competition.

*Opportunities to compete in the XPrize competition.

Last year was the first year of B.E.L.L.’s XPrize competition, with approximately 70 current or potential business owners applying for consideration. Competitors met each Tuesday night for months with city business leaders, receiving advice on how to start or expand their companies. The competition narrowed considerably, with four businesses splitting the grand prize of $100,000, put up by J.M. Cope Construction.

Of the four winners, two were Winthrop alumni:

*Julissa White ’12 and her husband, Harold, brought home $25,000 for their company, True Divine Expressions. The company provides custom and Greek apparel.

*Erika Hogan ’08, ’10, won $18,000 for her New Attitude Performing Arts Center, which offers a variety of dance styles, and programs both in leadership and for dancers with varied physical abilities.
