ROCK HILL, SOUTH CAROLINA – Winthrop University History Professor Edward Lee will receive the Distinguished Citizenship Award on March 31 from the Palmetto Council of the Boy Scouts of America.

The former mayor of York is a 35-year veteran of the university classroom and has taught more than 10,000 history students.

Giving the keynote address at the 6:30 p.m. event at the Winthrop Coliseum will be recently retired Carolina Panthers football player Luke Kuechly, who played all eight seasons of his professional career with the Panthers.

Organizers said Lee was chosen for the citizenship award because of his service to his community. He was mayor of York for 17.5 years, serving the longest tenure of any mayor for the county seat. In 2015, then-S.C. Governor Nikki Haley presented Lee with the State Historic Preservation Award for leading the successful effort to save the York County Courthouse in York.

A former president of the South Carolina Historical Association, Lee serves on the State Archives Commission and the National Register of Historical Places Review Board.

His success in the classroom has earned him several teaching awards, including the 2016 Faculty-Student Life Award at Winthrop. In 2011, he presented the address at the institution’s 125th anniversary Convocation.

Lee has published 15 books, including two acclaimed books on the Vietnam War and one on the Civil War.

He earned his Eagle Scout Award in 1967 as a member of Troop 62 sponsored by Purity Presbyterian Church.

A second Boy Scouts award, the Educator of the Year Award, will be given to Dee Christopher, principal of Catawba Ridge High School.
