ROCK HILL, SOUTH CAROLINA - Campus Police encourage students not to fall victim to a new phone scam targeting the Winthrop University campus community.

In this new scheme, scammers claiming to be representatives from the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) tell victims that they owe the IRS back taxes and must send their tax returns back to the IRS. The scammers also ask victims to provide their address and other personal information. The scammers threaten to arrest victims if they do not cooperate.

While the phone number on your caller ID may belong to the IRS, the scammers have "spoofed" it, meaning they have the capability to program the number into the call and reflect it on the caller ID as from the IRS.

"Please do not fall victim to this scam," Campus Police Chief Frank Zebedis wrote in a campus-wide e-mail last week. "If you believe the IRS would truly be calling you, please hang up and call the IRS directly."

If you receive a call like this, please contact your local law enforcement.

NEVER send money, credit card numbers or any personal information to someone you do not recognize.
