ROCK HILL, SOUTH CAROLINA - Winthrop University invites students to explore the values,
ethics, social obligations and leadership skills that go along with engaged citizenship
and use that knowledge in the real world with its new civic and public engagement minor. The university also now offers a civic and public engagement certificate program.
The new minor welcomed its first group of students this fall, said Ginger Williams, professor of history and director of both the peace, justice and conflict resolution
studies and the individualized studies programs.
"This minor and certificate would be a perfect fit for students who wish to work in
the community upon graduation by serving on boards of nonprofit organizations, doing
community development work, or becoming involved in local politics," she said.
*The minor consists of 18 credit hours, with at least six hours at the 300- or above-level.
Required courses include intro to civic and public engagement (CAPE 101); a capstone
project (CAPE 400); and intro to ethics (PHIL 230).
Students can also choose three to eight hours of an "experiential component," selecting
from courses such as healing arts in medicine (ENG 328); practice in global leadership
(LEAD 476); and principles of microeconomics (ECON 215); as well as nine elective
hours covering a range of topics.
*The certificate program requires 12 credit hours, including the same three required
classes of the minor, in addition to an experiential component and elective.
Both avenues are open to all majors.
