ROCK HILL, SOUTH CAROLINA – Winthrop University is making history by becoming the first institution to host a national collegiate disc golf championship on its campus.

More than 200 college teams will descend on Winthrop for the April 2-6 College Disc Golf National Championship.

The championship will feature men’s teams from Division I, II and III schools, as well as nearly 50 female players. In all, there will be more than 800 players participating in this major competition.

Jonathan Poole, one of the organizers who works at Innova Disc Golf, has a long history with disc golf at Winthrop. He is the co-founder and event director of the U.S. Disc Golf Championship which celebrated its 25th anniversary at the Winthrop course last fall.

The collegiate event was founded in 2007, he said, but had to skip 2020. This year’s championship will be the 17th annual event.

During the championship, the College Disc Golf competitors will play on five unique courses across three properties: the legendary Winthrop University, Westminster Park and Camp Canaan. Players will practice and begin checking in on April 2 with the opening celebration scheduled that night at 7 p.m. at the Winthrop Coliseum. Winners will be crowned on April 6.

Winthrop Athletics Director Chuck Rey said his department is excited to host the championship in partnership with Innova for the first time. “The Winthrop Disc Golf Courses are internationally known as the best courses in the world, and we look forward to showcasing Winthrop University in this way,” he said. “This area of the country is becoming a mecca of disc golf and we are fortunate to yet again be at the epicenter.”

Winthrop will field its own team to compete for the national title.
