This year's conference has 26 participants who attend a variety of South Carolina
colleges and universities, such as Winthrop University, the University of South Carolina,
Benedict College and the College of Charleston. The four-and-a-half-day residential program is designed to educate college women
about the political process and teach them to become effective public leaders in politics,
public policy and public service. 
ROCK HILL, SOUTH CAROLINA — With South Carolina ranked 47th in the country for women
in elected office, a group of college-aged women will be learning more about being
effective leaders and the political process.
The South Carolina Chapter of the NEW Leadership Conference, now in its fourth year, will gather at Winthrop University from May 15-19. The conference
is a non-partisan program sponsored by the John C. West Forum at Winthrop University with its partner, the College of Charleston. The four-and-a-half-day
residential program is designed to educate college women about the political process
and teach them to become effective public leaders in politics, public policy and public
service.

The group will visit the State House in Columbia, South Carolina, on Wednesday, May
18.
The young women will meet with female legislators, South Carolina Superintendent of
Education Molly Spearman, S.C. Supreme Court Justice Kaye G. Hearn, Governor Nikki
Haley's Chief of Staff Swati Patel, Nexsen Pruet attorney Marguerite Willis, and many
more female leaders from across the state.
