ROCK HILL, SOUTH CAROLINA - Admiral Joe Sestak, one of the Democratic Party candidates for president, will be at Winthrop on Nov. 8

A former Navy 3-star Admiral, Sestak was one of the highest ranking military officers ever elected to Congress when he represented Pennsylvania’s Seventh Congressional District from 2007-2011.

He will be at the Macfeat House from noon to 1 p.m. The event is free and open to the public. Sponsors for the event are the College Democrats.

Sestak served as President Clinton’s Director for Defense Policy on the National Security Council in the White House, was the first Director of the Navy’s strategic anti-terrorism unit (Deep Blue) after 9/11, commanded an aircraft carrier battle group in combat operations in Afghanistan and Iraq, and was the Deputy Chief of Naval Operations for Warfare Requirements responsible for the Navy’s five year $350 billion warfare requirements.

A U.S. Naval Academy graduate, he holds a Ph.D. in Political Economy and Government and a master’s degree in public administration, both from Harvard University. He is concerned about international environmental issues, from Kazakhstan to Mozambique; Russian relations, even into Soviet Union archives as U.S. teams still search for clues to our missing POW/MIAs, and on suicide prevention for the Veterans Administration and the Defense Department.

Winthrop University is a public institution dedicated to serving the state of South Carolina and to promoting the free exchange of ideas and informed citizenship. Thus, Winthrop University welcomes political candidates, elected officials, and guest speakers from all partisan and ideological perspectives to visit campus and to present their ideas to the Winthrop and Rock Hill communities.
