ROCK HILL, SOUTH CAROLINA – The Winthrop University Department of Music continues its Guest Artist Series with pianist David Gross on Sunday, Feb. 23 at 4 p.m. The event will be held in the Frances May Barnes Recital Hall, and admission is free.
Gross regularly guest-performs in concert halls throughout the United States and Germany. The wide expressive spectrum of his playing is brightly reflected in the critical acclaim he has garnered. Reviewers praise his “warm touch and sensitive, sparkling transparency” and “perfect control of sound” as well as his virtuosic ability.
Gross has been featured as a soloist of the great piano concerto repertoire with the Berliner Symphoniker, Staatsorchester Frankfurt/Oder, Ensemble Oriol, Rockford Symphony (Illinois), Champaign-Urbana Symphony, Macon Symphony (Georgia), Idaho Civic Symphony, Anderson Symphony, Merrimack Valley Philharmonic (Massachusetts), Hendersonville Symphony (North Carolina), Western Piedmont Symphony and Brevard Philharmonic.
An active recording artist, Gross has also been featured on numerous solo broadcasts for German NPR, in the film “Singing Hands” produced by German National Public Television and on several recitals for the Dame Myra Hess Memorial Concert Series broadcast live on WFMT in Chicago. His CD of Edouard Lalo's Piano Concerto with the Staatsorchester Frankfurt/Oder was met with critical acclaim and selected for the in-flight audio program on Lufthansa. As a founding member of the Poinsett Piano Trio he has performed extensively globally.
Born and raised in Berlin, Gross currently lives in Greenville, where he’s a professor at Furman University. Prior to Furman, he served on the faculty at the Hochschule Hanns Eisler in Berlin and other faculty appointments at Western Michigan University, Goshen College and the University of Cape Town (South Africa). He holds degrees from the Hochschule München, the Yale School of Music, the Hochschule Hannover and the University of Illinois.
