ROCK HILL, SOUTH CAROLINA — A lawn picnic, a concert, a soccer game, a cooking competition and canoe battleship are some of the activities planned for Winthrop University's Family Day on Saturday, Oct. 6.

More than 700 family members are expected during the annual event, according to Callie Smith, director of New Student and Family Programs. "Rock Hill and our campus are beautiful during the fall so we want to show it off to our students' families," Smith said. "We have a day full of varied activities so families can explore the campus and York County."

New this year, families can arrive for early check-in on Friday, Oct. 5 between 4-7 p.m. in the DiGiorgio Campus Center lobby to jumpstart the family fun. Or they can check in Saturday morning in the Tuttle Room in McBryde Hall.

President Dan Mahony and several key administrators will welcome everyone Saturday after a light breakfast in McBryde Hall.

Next, families will head off to an academic showcase in their student's college where they'll hear about current research, special projects and events, and academic successes. Guests are invited to the front lawn to enjoy a noon picnic and family-oriented activities on Margaret Nance Lawn such as a photo booth, crafts and pumpkin decorating. The rain location for the picnic is the DiGiorgio Campus Center and West Center.

Afternoon activities are from 2-5 p.m. and include events, some brought back by popular demand:

* An Iron Chef cooking competition among family members in the Dalton Hall kitchen
* A tree-planting across campus
* A battleship competition in the West Center pool
* A music ensemble showcase at the Amphitheatre
* A women's soccer game on the Coliseum grounds
* The U.S. Disc Golf Championship on the Coliseum grounds with players from around the world competing

Participants also can visit destinations around York County, such as the Windy Hill Orchard & Cider Mill tour in York and the Riverwalk walking trail off Cherry Road in Rock Hill.

On the evening of Oct. 6, students and family members can see the Winthrop theatre and dance department's production of "Dog Sees God: Confessions of a Teenage Blockhead" at Johnson Theatre, while the DiGiorgio Student Union will show the movie "Incredibles 2." Or, groups can head to the SCarowinds Halloween Haunt.
