Family Day to Unite Students and Loved Ones Amid Fun and Educational Activities

ROCK HILL, SOUTH CAROLINA – Winthrop University will welcome visitors to campus on Saturday, Oct. 2 as Family Day activities unite students with their loved ones.

Callie Smith ‘13, director of New Student and Family Programs, said the number of participants will be limited to 600 this year as COVID-19 restrictions will be in place. Walk-ins are not permitted for the annual event, which will highlight academics, the arts, fun fall activities, entertainment and sustainability.

“October is a beautiful time of year in Rock Hill. Families will be able to learn more about, and to appreciate, their students’ Winthrop experience,” Smith said.

Family Day schedule

Check-in for Family Day starts on Saturday, Oct. 2 from 8-9:50 a.m. in McBryde Hall, though families can elect to check-in early on Friday afternoon as well. 

Interim President George Hynd and other members of university leadership, will give a welcome in McBryde at 10 a.m. and then families will fan out across the campus to academic showcases for each college. The Eagle Family Picnic will take place in Eagle Eatery in Thomson Hall with families assigned a time to eat, in keeping crowd size controlled.

Activities from 2-5 p.m. occur in several locations on- and off-campus with activities such as a locally sourced pumpkin patch on campus, the popular Iron Chef cooking competition, a trivia challenge, a field day competition, volleyball and soccer games, and a music ensemble showcase featuring student performers in front of Byrnes Auditorium. 

Elsewhere on campus, there will be an archives exhibit in the Little Chapel and exhibits in the Winthrop Galleries. Off the main campus, participants are invited to explore Windy Hill Orchard & Cider Mill in York or Cotton Hills Farm fall festivities.

On the evening of Oct. 2, the Winthrop theatre and dance department will offer “The Arkansaw Bear” in the Johnson Studio Theatre, and the DiGiorgio Student Union will offer the “In the Heights” film followed by a student panel about the film (cultural event). There are also suggestions and opportunities for off-campus events.
