ROCK HILL, SOUTH CAROLINA - George Kannon, a Winthrop University facilities management employee, passed away on Feb. 10. He was 62.

Kannon, a special events set-up specialist, joined the Winthrop staff in December 2011.

During his years at Winthrop, Kannon served in many different roles, including maintaining the Hardin Family Garden. Most recently, he was responsible for setting up for special events on campus.

In 2014, he shared a Presidential Citation award with three of his colleagues. The group was recognized for its commitment to around-the-clock maintenance and hazardous weather-related tasks that ensured the safety of students and employees during the campus' three-day shutdown due to snow and ice.

"He was not only a gentleman, but a gentle man, always smiling and friendly and a person who will be missed by all," said Walter Hardin, associate vice president for facilities management in a campus-wide e-mail.

Kannon's funeral will be held Saturday, Feb. 20, at the Queen of the Apostles Church, 503 N. Main Street, Belmont, NC 28012. Visitation will be at 10 a.m. and the service will be held at 11 a.m. After the service, the burial will take place at the Belmont Abbey Cemetery.
