Praised by many for his academic excellence, professionalism and commitment to social
justice, Ethan Johnstone was instrumental in securing new funding streams for Pendleton
Place for Children and Families, where he is completing a two-semester field placement. In addition, Johnstone and fellow graduate student Krista Parenti and faculty member
Monique Constance-Huggins, have recently completed a community needs and asset assessment
of the LGBTQ community in the 10-county Upstate area.
ROCK HILL, SOUTH CAROLINA — Winthrop University graduate student Ethan Johnstone was named the National Association of Social Work, South Carolina Chapter graduate
student of the year on March 23.
The announcement came during the chapter's meeting in Columbia, South Carolina.
Praised by many for his academic excellence, professionalism and commitment to social
justice, Johnstone was instrumental in securing new funding streams for Pendleton Place for Children and Families, a Greenville, South Carolina, organization where he is completing a two-semester
field placement.
In addition, Johnstone and fellow graduate student Krista Parenti and Monique Constance-Huggins, an assistant professor of social work, have recently completed a community needs
and asset assessment of the LGBTQ community in the 10-county Upstate area. The project,
Oppression in the LGBTQ Community: A Social Justice Concern for All, was conceptualized and designed by Johnstone. It was presented at the annual conference
in Columbia.
Winthrop professors said Johnstone truly embodied the theme of this year's conference:
"Social Workers — Leaders, Advocates, Champions."
A Greenville, South Carolina, native and graduate of D.W. Daniel High School, Johnstone
holds a Bachelor of Social Work degree from Limestone College. He will receive his
M.S.W. degree from Winthrop in May.
