ROCK HILL, SOUTH CAROLINA – The South Carolina Association for the Advancement of
Health Education recognized Winthrop University Professor Shelley Hamill Nov. 10 with
its 2017 Outstanding Contribution to Health Education Award.
Hamill, a professor of health and physical education, chaired the S.C. Health and
Safety Education Standards Review/Writing Committee in updating the health education
standards for K-12 public schools. The committee’s suggestions were incorporated into
a new framework passed by the S.C. Board of Education in August and included three
new legislative mandates.
Association members noted during the award presentation at its annual conference
in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, that the committee’s work has been integral to health
education. Hamill provided leadership to guide the committee process and followed
up with staff at the Department of Education to make sure the committee’s recommendations
moved through the approval process.
Last year, the S.C. Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance honored
Hamill with its highest award at its annual conference in Myrtle Beach.
Hamill joined the Winthrop faculty in 1998 after teaching on the elementary, middle
and collegiate levels. At Winthrop, she teaches various courses in health and health
education at the graduate and undergraduate level in the Department of Physical Education,
Sport and Human Performance. Her areas of specialty include pedagogy and human sexuality.
She is passionate about animals and has worked with national animal organizations
that train volunteers and mobilize during disasters to rescue and shelter animals.
