potteryROCK HILL, SOUTH CAROLINA — A long and cherished Winthrop University tradition returns to campus this Friday with the 29th Annual Holiday Pottery Sale. Get a head start on your holiday shopping—if you haven’t already!—with one-of-a-kind, handmade pieces from students, alumni and more.

“We will have approximately 17 artists this year, 13 of whom are students,” said Jim Connell, professor of fine arts and coordinator of the pottery sale. “This year’s sale will include a high number of upperclassmen and graduate students as well as a couple of alumni/professional guest artists.”

The sale will be from noon-6 p.m. in G-10 Rutledge Building.

Works for sale this year include a tall, intricately glazed pitcher; a colorfully swirled figurine piece of a frog nestling a flowered pot; and unique turquoise and sienna mugs.

While the sale is a highly anticipated tradition for the campus community, it’s become a tradition for the local community as well, serving as part of the kick-off for Rock Hill’s huge ChristmasVille event.

The pottery sale also serves another special purpose: students not only benefit from the experience of selling their work; proceeds from the sale are put back into the Department of Fine Arts for upgrading classroom equipment and materials.
