ROCK HILL, SOUTH CAROLINA – The fourth annual Day of Understanding on May 4 will take on an international flavor this year to highlight the path immigrant faculty members have taken to teach at Winthrop University. This year’s theme is “Multicultural and International Experiences.”
The 11 a.m. event in Dina’s Place, located in the DiGiorgio Campus Center, is sponsored by President Edward A. Serna ’02 and the university’s Diversity Council to celebrate PricewaterhouseCoopers’ (PwC) CEO Action for Diversity and Inclusion.
The format will be a panel discussion as seven faculty members will talk about their culture and how they have acclimated to living in the southeastern part of the United States.
“By understanding the rich cultures here at Winthrop, we want our campus community to be a place where our international faculty, staff and students feel inclusive and have a sense of belonging,” said Zan Jones '96, associate vice president of human resources, employee diversity and wellness, and chief diversity officer. Jones also leads the university’s Diversity Council, which is made up of 19 faculty, staff and student members.
Leigh Poole, director of the International Center and interim dean of University College, will moderate the discussion.

Myles Calvert (Canada), assistant professor of fine arts
Catherine Chang (Taiwan), assistant professor of history
Monique Constance-Huggins (St. Vincent and the Grenadines), associate professor of social work
Duha Hamed (Jordan/Palestine), associate professor of mathematics
Anna Romanova (Russia), assistant professor of quantitative methods
Danko Tarabar (Serbia), associate professor of economics
Silvia Wozniak (Brazil), adjunct faculty member in biology
Toward the end of the event, attendees will have an opportunity to ask the panelists questions. Following the event, attendees will be invited to sample foods that are authentic to the panelists’ home countries in 114 DiGiorgio Campus Center.
