ROCK HILL, SOUTH CAROLINA -- This fall, the Winthrop University Galleries (WUG) honors the contributions and legacy of the late Winthrop University Associate Professor Emeritus Paul Martyka.
Seeds to Sow: Remembering Paul Martyka (1950-2016)

Rutledge and Elizabeth Dunlap Patrick Galleries
"Seeds to Sow" is an exhibition celebrating long-time artist and influential Associate
Professor Emeritus Paul Martyka (1950-2016). The work displayed in the Rutledge and
Elizabeth Dunlap Patrick Galleries showcases the broad spectrum of his work in printmaking,
painting and mixed media from his years as a student in Michigan until 2015. By observing
a timeline of his career, the high level of artistry given to his methods and creative
vision becomes evident. His use of a geometric iconography, attention to color and
continual experimentation show us his distinct visual style. In addition to the works
he made independently, the exhibition will feature collaborative works with students,
highlighting his attention to the development of future artists.
An opening reception will be held for this exhibition on Friday, Sept. 21 from 6:30-8
p.m. This event is free and open to the public.

WUG Panel: A Discussion of the Artist, the Educator and the Collaborator

The panel will focus on the unique impact Martyka had as an educator, collaborator,
artist and member of the Rock Hill arts community. The cultural event panel will be
moderated by Professor Emeritus Tom Stanley. Panelists will include Chris Clamp '01,
Reed Elliot '03, Mike Gentry '08 and Janice Mueller '99.
WUG Workshop: Polyhedra with Adrian Rhodes '05
Friday, Oct. 26, 1-4 p.m.
227 Rutledge Building
Join alumnus Adrian Rhodes '05 for a polyhedra-making workshop. Rhodes will take participants
through the process of moving artwork from flat to dimensional, sharing issues she
has encountered and resolved regarding paper construction. The workshop will include
demonstrations and hands-on creation.
WUG Workshop: Collaboration with Reed Elliot '03
Thursday, Nov. 1, 6-8 p.m.

In his practice, Martyka regularly collaborated with students and colleagues to create
works of art. Join alumnus Reed Elliot '03 for a workshop focused on collaboration
where Elliot will share his experiences collaborating with Martyka and will lead participants
in a collaborative exercise of their own. Participants are encouraged to bring preferred
art materials and unfinished or in-progress works.

Putting a Face on Syria: Hope Through Education

International documentary photographer Tina Manley's exhibition of photographs depicts
the Syrian refugee children and their schools to raise awareness and money for scholarships
for these children. The children are all Syrian refugees, either living in Lebanon
or internally displaced in Syria.
An opening reception will be held for this exhibition on Thursday, Sept. 6 from 6:30-7
p.m. This event is free and open to the public.
