Those are just some of the reasons why the South Carolina Chapter of the National Association of Teachers of Singing (SCNATS) just presented Winthrop University music faculty member Jeremy Mims with the Fran McMillan Pinson Collaborative Pianist Award.
Established in 2020, the award is in memory of Fran McMillan Pinson, a staff accompanist for the South Carolina School of the Arts at Anderson University, and recognizes an outstanding contribution by a pianist accompanying singers.
“I love collaborating with singers and assisting them in their performances,” said Mims, an associate professor of music. “I was honored to be nominated and then receive this award. I am grateful to be able to make music with our singers at Winthrop and in our state. Thanks to the students and teachers with whom I get to collaborate on a weekly basis!”

Other Recent Department of Music Achievements
Music majors Olivia Clifton and Will Isenhour have won scholarships from the International Trumpet Guild. The pair will travel to Anaheim, California, in May to attend the guild’s five-day conference, which will feature world-class performances, clinics and exhibitors.
About Jeremy Mims
In addition to his professor duties, Mims directs all of Winthrop’s choral activities. He’s served as musical director, chorus master and accompanist for shows for professional, collegiate and local theatres and opera companies, and has showcased his talents on the national and international stage as well. Twice, he’s performed as the pianist at the Prague Choral Festival.
Choirs under Mims’ tutelage have placed in The American Prize national competition.
He holds degrees from Hardin-Simmons University and the University of Missouri-Kansas City Conservatory of Music and Dance.
