ROCK HILL, SOUTH CAROLINA — Winthrop University Political Science Professor Jennifer Leigh Disney traveled to New York this week to receive the Distinguished Alumni Award from her alma mater.

The Ph.D./M.A. program in political science of the Graduate School and University Center of the City University of New York (CUNY) will present the 2016 Distinguished Alumni Award on May 6.

Disney, who is the chair of the Department of Political Science and director of the Women's and Gender Studies program at Winthrop, was nominated by her mentors, Irving Leonard Markovitz and Kenneth Erickson. Disney will give a presentation during the awards ceremony on "Comparative Intersectional Feminisms."

"I was honored to be selected to receive the award. " Disney said, "but nervous about the timing."

She intends to return in time for the May 7 Undergraduate Commencement exercises. "It was important to me to be able to be back in time to see my students graduate, and to celebrate Dr. Scott Huffmon (Department of Political Science) winning the Distinguished Professor award. It has been a big year for political science, and I wasn't going to miss it."

A native of Maryland, Disney also received a Winthrop Presidential Citation last month for her outstanding leadership in bringing the Southeastern Women's Studies Association (SEWSA) annual meeting to Winthrop March 31-April 2.
