It was noted that Professor Shelley Hamill has served the alliance in multiple leadership
roles, including as president and member of several committees. At Winthrop, she teaches various courses in health and health education at the graduate
and undergraduate level in the Department of Physical Education, Sport and Human Performance.
Her areas of specialty include pedagogy and human sexuality.
ROCK HILL, SOUTH CAROLINA — The S.C. Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance will honor Winthrop Professor Shelley Hamill with its highest award at its annual conference in Myrtle Beach on Nov. 12.
Hamill, a professor of health and physical education, has been a member of the association
for 18 years. The Honor Award is given only when there is a nominee and is voted on by committee members.
It was noted that Hamill has served the alliance in multiple leadership roles, including
as president and member of several committees. She also contributed as a committee
chair for the Southern District of the Society for Health and Physical Educators (SHAPE America), and at the national level as a member on three significant committees:
the Health Education Teacher Education Standards Review and Development, SHAPE America Committee for Best Practices for Transgender Students, and Health Education Best Practices Teaching Sub-committee.
For more than a decade, Hamill has represented the association by making numerous presentations each year for school
districts, at regionals and at SHAPE America. She has published in multiple national, peer-reviewed journals, and this year, with
co-writer, J. Boyd, published the text, Personal and Community Health, for use by Winthrop students.
She is a reviewer for several national publications, including the Journal of School Health and Contemporary Women's Health.
Winthrop awarded Hamill a Presidential Citation in 2011 in recognition of her contributions to the successful grant acquisition for
the Sexual Assault Resource Center. She has received at Winthrop the Faculty Student Life award, three community service awards and has been recognized twice as a "Woman of Achievement." She also was the recipient in 2010 for two state health educator of the year awards.
Hamill joined the Winthrop faculty in 1998 after teaching on the elementary, middle
and collegiate levels. At Winthrop, she teaches various courses in health and health
education at the graduate and undergraduate level in the Department of Physical Education, Sport and Human Performance. Her areas of specialty include pedagogy and human sexuality.
She is passionate about animals and has worked with national animal organizations
that train volunteers and mobilize during disasters to rescue and shelter animals.
