S.C. Weekly Journalist of the Year to Keynote Mass Comm Week

ROCK HILL, SOUTH CAROLINA—South Carolina Press Association (SCPA) Weekly Journalist of the Year Charles Perry ’05 will highlight the Winthrop University Department of Mass Communication’s Mass Comm Week, beginning Monday, Sept. 30.

Perry will speak to classes on Wednesday, Oct. 2: 9:30-10:45 a.m. in 115 Johnson Hall; and 11 a.m.-12:15 p.m. in G02 Owens Hall. He will also be honored at a distinguished alumnus reception in the Johnson Hall lobby at 12:30 p.m. The campus community is invited to all events.

Perry, editor of the Carolina Forest Chronicle and the North Strand News, received a bachelor’s degree in mass communication from Winthrop. His coverage—from breaking news on hurricanes and tornadoes to fun features on rodeo cowboys and race-car drivers—has earned him approximately 100 journalist awards, including national honors.

In presenting him with the Weekly Journalist of the Year Award this past April, SCPA judges noted Perry’s work is “the type of journalism that makes a difference.”
