CHARLOTTE, NORTH CAROLINA — Winthrop University soccer player Anne Cushman was recently awarded a Bob McCloskey Insurance Big South Conference Graduate Fellowship to pursue graduate studies in English literature and composition.

Bob McCloskey Insurance, a Big South corporate partner, will present $2,000 to Cushman on June 1 as part of the conference's annual Spring Awards and Hall of Fame Banquet at The Marriott Resort in Hilton Head, South Carolina. The Big South Conference Graduate Fellowship Program was established by the league in 2005 as a means of recognizing the academic excellence of Big South Conference student-athletes who intend to pursue postgraduate studies upon graduation from a Big South Conference institution.

A co-captain for the women's soccer team from Raleigh, North Carolina, Cushman received a Fulbright U.S. Student Program award for an English Teaching Assistantship for the 2017-18 academic year. She graduated in May with an English major and biology minor. After a year of teaching in Thailand, Cushman plans to attend graduate school and has been accepted to several universities.

During her time at Winthrop, Cushman appeared in 54 games for the Eagles with 33 starts during her four-year career. She was awarded the Mary Mildred Sullivan Award, one of the top awards given by the Division of Student Life, and was a peer mentor, a writing tutor for Winthrop's L.E.A.P. Program, secretary of Sigma Tau Delta and the community service coordinator for the Student-Athlete Advisory Council.

A recipient of the Hurley Fellowship to study abroad, Cushman spent the summer of 2016 in the United Kingdom as part of her Honors Program thesis. She also volunteered with the Boys & Girls Club afterschool program, read to local elementary school children monthly and helped raise money for the Alex's Lemonade Stand charity organization.
