Stoudenmire-Elshazly Piano Duo Set for Next Music Guest Artist Series

ROCK HILL, SOUTH CAROLINA -- The Winthrop University Department of Music continues the 2018-19 Guest Artist Series with the Stoudenmire-Elshazly Piano Duo on Tuesday, March 5, at 7:30 p.m. in Barnes Recital Hall at Winthrop. The program will include Saint-Saëns’ “The Carnival of the Animals” as well as Ravel’s “La Valse,” among other works. This event is free and open to the public.

Myungsook Song Stoudenmire, a piano faculty member at Charleston Southern University, received a doctor of musical arts degree from the University of South Carolina, a master’s degree in music from Columbia College, and bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Sungshin Women’s University in Seoul. She has also completed one year of residency for doctoral studies at the College-Conservatory of Music at the University of Cincinnati and was a recipient of the Dowling Memorial Scholarship from the Dowling Foundation in Charleston. Her summer and post-doctoral studies were at the International Keyboard Institute and Festival of Mannes and Hunter College in New York, the Piano Texas International Festival and Academy of Texas Christian University in Fort Worth, Texas, the Brevard Music Center in North Carolina and Santa Cecilia Conservatory in Italy.

Stoudenmire has appeared extensively in recital throughout the Southeastern United States and with orchestras in Korea, Germany and the United States. She has appeared at the Piccolo Spoleto Festival, Sulzbach-Rosenberg International Festival, Stafford Steinway Festival and Hangran Music Festival.

She is a devoted teacher with piano studios in both Columbia and Summerville. Her students have won major competitions at the local, state and regional levels. Since 2011, she has appeared with Janet Elshazly in venues that include the Newberry Opera House and the Piccolo Spoleto Spotlight Concert Series.

Elshazly is originally from Chicago, Illinois, where she began her piano and violin studies. Her piano performance degrees include a bachelor’s degree in music from Illinois Wesleyan University, master’s degree in music from the University of Illinois and a doctor of musical arts from the Catholic University of America.

For three years, she served as faculty accompanist and piano instructor at the University of Wisconsin in Superior. She taught both violin and piano in the preparatory department at the University of Ohio in Bowling Green and taught a string methods class at the University of Toledo (Ohio). She has taught general music classes in the public K-12 schools of Illinois, Maryland and South Carolina, and has been a strings instructor in the K-12 public schools of Virginia and South Carolina.

For four years Elshazly was the rehearsal accompanist for the Charleston Symphony Chorus. She has performed in several concerts with the Charleston Chamber Music Association, as well as in other concerts in this region, including Piccolo Spoleto concerts. She currently serves as associate director of music at St. Andrews Presbyterian Church in West Ashley. Elshazly has worked as a visiting collaborative pianist at Charleston Southern University since 2008.
