vote of confidence. Their first CSL meeting will be Monday, Aug. 20, at 7 p.m. in 114 DiGiorgio Campus
Center. All students are invited. 
ROCK HILL, SOUTH CAROLINA Ximena Perez-Velazco and Jared Garrett will serve as the president and vice president, respectively, for the Council of Student Leaders (CSL), Winthrop University's student government body, for the 2018-19 academic year.
Nearly 200 students participated in the election process, issuing the pair with a
vote of confidence.
"I was overwhelmed with joy and humbled by the support we received from the student
body and the faculty-staff," Perez-Velazco said.
At a forum in March, she and Garrett shared their campaign goals, which include increasing
retention by ensuring more on-campus extracurriculars are available; "thriving" with
the new Winthrop brand and all it entails; and highlighting self-responsibility when
it comes to the resources available for all students, such as the space request system,
to name a few. The pair modeled its platform after the Winthrop Plan, the university's strategic plan through 2025.
Perez-Velazco, a senior human nutrition major from Cheraw, South Carolina, is no stranger
to CSL. She's been active in the organization since her freshman year. She's also
served as an Orientation Leader and Emerging Leader and been a member of Winthrop's
chapter of the NAACP, the Order of Omega, the Student Dietetic Association, Alpha
Delta Pi and various campus boards.
Garrett is a senior sport management major from North Charleston, South Carolina,
and a member of Alpha Phi Alpha. Like his running mate, he's long been active in the
CSL organization.
