Students Can Still Win Scholarships As Game Changers Program Winds Down

ROCK HILL, SOUTH CAROLINA - With the last Winthrop Eagles men's basketball home game this weekend, students have one of the final chances to win money through the new Game Changers scholarship program.

If the Eagles defeat the University of North Carolina Asheville during the noon game Feb. 20 at the Winthrop Coliseum, students attending will be eligible for the one of three $500 scholarships. The game is crucial for the team because the Eagles are vying for first place in the Big South Conference standings.

To be eligible for the $500 scholarships, students have to arrive before half time, have their Winthrop IDs scanned when they enter the Coliseum and sit in sections 114 or 115.

The promotion, which was developed this season by President Dan Mahony to increase student attendance at home basketball games, ends this weekend for the men's team and on March 1 for the women's team.

There is also a second promotion going on. Regardless of the outcome of both final games, one student from among those in attendance who have attended a total of 5 games this season will win a larger scholarship amounting to around $4,000. President Mahony will randomly draw one name from all students in attendance who have attended a minimum of five games.

At the final women's home game on March 1, Mahony also will give out three more $500 scholarships if there is a win and then give out a second scholarship for around $4,000.

"The Game Changers scholarship program is a win-win proposition," Mahony has said. "Our talented basketball players receive the support and encouragement they need on the court, and our students can earn money to put toward their tuition and, ultimately, their future. I can't think of a better investment than one that directly benefits our students."
