ROCK HILL, SOUTH CAROLINA — It's time to "ease on down the road" when "The Wiz" comes to Winthrop University this week.
This faculty-directed musical theatre production from the Department of Theatre and Dance and the Department of Music runs Wednesday, Feb. 15 through Saturday, Feb. 18 at 8 p.m. with 2 p.m. matinees
on Saturday, Feb. 18 and Sunday, Feb. 19 in Johnson Theatre. Tickets are $10 with a Winthrop ID and $15 for the general public.
With an infectious, funky-soul score, "The Wiz" brings renewed relevance to a timeless
classic. This beloved Broadway gem infuses L. Frank Baum's "The Wonderful Wizard of
Oz" with a dazzling mix of rock, gospel and soul music.
Winner of seven Tony Awards, this version of Dorothy's adventures through the Land
of Oz is a fun, family-friendly modern musical set in the context of African-American
culture.
Student performers include Fantajza Johnson (Fort Mill, South Carolina) as Dorothy; Cameron Drayton (Andrews, South Carolina) as the Tin Man; Jordan McKoy (Charlotte, North Carolina) as the Lion; and Deonte Streeter (Lexington, South Carolina) as the Scarecrow.
