ROCK HILL, SOUTH CAROLINA – At its Nov. 6 meeting, the Winthrop University Board of Trustees commended Dorothy “Dot” Barber of  the Ida Jane Dacus Library for her 50 years of employment with the university.

The long-time library employee was recognized during the quarterly meeting for her employment milestone and was presented a framed resolution.

Barber retired in 2008 from full-time work but continues working on a part-time basis. Hired as one of the university’s first African-American professional staff members, she was a mentor not only for African-American students but for any student who needed a sympathetic ear.

The resolution noted that she joined the library staff in 1970 as a clerk typist and held various positions over the years in accounting, technical services and most recently as an executive support specialist. Barber’s co-workers said she performed an exceptional job in interviewing and hiring student workers for the library. She let students know that she expected no less than their best when they became library workers.
