ROCK HILL, SOUTH CAROLINA — On Friday, Dec. 2, Winthrop University Galleries will hold an opening reception from 6:30-8 p.m. for two new faculty exhibitions: "Eye to Eye" by Phil Moody in the Rutledge Gallery and "Hovering" by Mark Hamilton in the Elizabeth Dunlap Patrick Gallery. Moody and Hamilton, professors in the Department of Fine Arts, will present a gallery talk at 7 p.m. during the reception with guest speaker David
Houston, photographer, curator and art historian.
Please note: With the closure of Oakland Avenue for the annual City of Rock Hill Christmas
Parade, guests attending the opening reception should enter campus at the Alumni Drive
entrance off of Cherry Road and park in the Johnson Lot. Guests also can access this
lot by entering campus via Park Avenue or Ebenezer Avenue.

"Eye to Eye" by Phil Moody

Moody, long-standing professor of photography at Winthrop, will present an exciting exhibition celebrating his role as a gifted artist and an important educator in Winthrop's Department
of Fine Arts for more than 30 years. Using ideas of realism formed in his early artistic
studies, he explores the relationship of location and identity with portrait photography.
The exhibition takes the viewer on a journey spanning several decades from the early
1980s in his homeland of Scotland to Moody's most recent work in 2016 with his travels in Portugal.
Moody received an M.F.A. in photography from the University of Michigan, and his work has
been exhibited throughout the United States and Europe. His artwork appears in numerous
collections including Bank of America, B.F. Goodrich, Scottish Arts Council and the
Charlotte-Douglas International Airport. Moody has won numerous awards in his career, including the Carnegie Foundation for the
Advancement of Teaching South Carolina Professor of the Year Award (1997), the Winthrop
University Kinard Award for Excellence in Teaching (1996) and the Winthrop University
Outstanding Junior Professor Award (1990). He also was the recipient of a South Carolina
Arts Commission Fellowship in 2004.

"Hovering" by Mark Hamilton

"Hovering" is a photography exhibition by Hamilton. His exhibition focuses on what is felt rather than what is seen. Hamilton's work explores his interest in the departure from reality: a sparkle of beauty,
a moment of grace, a slight gesture of the hand, the passion and inner struggles of
the human experience. This exhibition contains mature subject matter and nudity.
Hamilton's fine arts works have been exhibited internationally and are included in both corporate
and private collections. He attended Parsons School of Design in New York City and
the University of North Carolina-Charlotte. His work is published in more than 50
international publications. Previous teaching assignments include the New School for
Social Research and The School of Visual Arts in New York City. Hamilton is a former recipient of the prestigious Renaissance Photo Prize (Best Image on Film),
which is awarded annually in London.
A panel discussion will be held in conjunction with Hamilton's exhibition "Hovering" on Thursday, Jan. 26, 2017, at 7 p.m. in Dina's Place (DiGiorgio Campus Center). The discussion, entitled "Hovering: Feminist Perspective," will be led by Hamilton;
Karen Stock, professor of fine arts; and Jennifer Disney, chair of the Department
of Political Science. This program contains mature subject matter and images of nudity.
