West Forum Unveils List of Election-Themed Spring Events

ROCK HILL, SOUTH CAROLINA – Winthrop University’s John C. West Forum on Politics and Policy has unveiled its spring series of events, all focused on Election 2020. 

All events, which are free and open to the public, will take place in Dina’s Place unless otherwise noted. They will also be broadcast on Facebook Live. 

The events are: 

First in the South Presidential Preference Primary

Jan. 28, 11 a.m.

College of Charleston faculty members Gibbs Knotts and Jordan Ragusa will discuss their new book, “First in the South,” and how central of a role South Carolina plays In the presidential preference primary. 

Election 2020: South Carolina, Redistricting, and the 2020 Election

Feb. 6, 11 a.m.

The University of South Carolina’s Laura Woliver will discuss the implications of the redistricting process. 

Meet Matthew Charles, first recipient of the First Step Act

Feb. 11, 6:30 p.m.

Richardson Ballroom

In partnership with Americans for Prosperity, Matthew Charles will discuss his time in prison, his life since then and his experience as the first recipient of the First Step Act, legislation promoting criminal justice reform. 

Live taping of WFAE’s “Charlotte Talks,” about the South Carolina Primary

Feb. 12, 7 p.m.

The session will feature WFAE host Mike Collins and Winthrop’s very own Scott Huffmon, director of the Winthrop Poll and professor of political science. 

Tim Shaffer: Creating Space for Democracy: The Challenges and Opportunities for Civil Discourse in American Civil Life

Feb. 17, 6 p.m.

In this presentation, Kansas State University’s Tim Shaffer explores dynamics of civil discourse in American civic life, drawing on research to better understand the factors that have contributed to our current state as well as models for how to respond to the challenges facing individuals and communities. Shaffer will highlight current and historical examples of civil discourse, the role of institutions on communities, and how we can cultivate a civic ecosystem that fosters robust, meaningful engagement among citizens. 

Michael Gerhardt Discusses Presidential Impeachment

Feb. 25, time TBA

UNC Chapel Hill’s Michael Gerhardt has written numerous books on impeachment and has testified before Congress for two presidential impeachment hearings. He will discuss the implications of impeachments on the U.S. Constitution.
