2016 Community Service awards are given to volunteers who demonstrate selfless service
and commitment to others. Both Dalton and Echols live in Rock Hill.

ROCK HILL, SOUTH CAROLINA — Harry Dalton '86 and Sylvia Echols '73 have been named recipients of the Come-See-Me Festival's 2016 Community Service Merit Award.
The awards are given to volunteers who improve the community through selfless service
and commitment to others. Winners are chosen by a panel of judges and nominated by
community members.

Harry Dalton '86: Dalton, a passionate environmentalist and philanthropist, has spent decades working
to better York County and beyond. Through the Sierra Club, he helped save Nanny's
Mountain near Clover, South Carolina, and Worth Mountain near Hickory Grove, South
Carolina. He is active with the Nation Ford Land Trust, the York County Community
Foundation, the Palmetto Conservation Foundation and Governor Riley's Environmental
Council. Dalton earned his M.A. in history at Winthrop, where he and his wife, 'Becca, established
the Harry and Becca Dalton Chair for Environmental Sciences and Environmental Studies.
Sylvia Echols '73: Echols has worked as a children's advocate in a variety of areas, working with businesses,
nonprofits, schools and the community. Currently she works as an instructional coach
for Rock Hill schools. Echols has developed a number of successful programs, including The Number 1 Question, "is
it good for the children?" and Success by 6, which has expanded into the Early Learning
Partnership. Her initiatives helped York County win first place in South Carolina
for overall child well-being. Echols, who earned her M.A.T. in home economics at Winthrop, lives in Rock Hill with her
husband, Rock Hill Mayor Doug Echols '77.
Two-time winner of the S.C. Event of the Year, Rock Hill's Come-See-Me Festival is an annual spring community festival that offers nearly 80 events and activities.
