Winthrop Athletics Statement Concerning Positive COVID-19 Cases

  • The Winthrop University men’s basketball program halted activities on Wednesday, Nov. 11, following positive cases of COVID-19 among Tier 1 personnel.
  • It is unknown at this time what impact the positive cases may have on the opening of the team’s season, which is set to begin Nov. 25.

The Winthrop University men’s basketball program halted activities on Wednesday, Nov. 11, following positive cases of COVID-19 among Tier 1 personnel as a result of surveillance testing. Tier 1 personnel consists of student-athletes, coaches, staff and managers. All Tier 1 personnel are now quarantining and isolating according to protocol for 10-14 days while testing and contract tracing continues.

Winthrop athletics has worked diligently to follow state, local and university guidelines, making health and safety its top priority for everyone involved in athletic activities. 

It is unknown at this time what impact the positive cases may have on the opening of the team’s season, which is set to begin Nov. 25.
