Winthrop Faculty Members Granted Tenure, Promotion or Emeritus Status

  • Trustees approved seven retiring faculty members for emeritus status. The faculty members contributed a combined total of more than 150 years of service to Winthrop.
  • Faculty tenure and promotions were acknowledged earlier and will take effect in August.

ROCK HILL, SOUTH CAROLINA — The Winthrop University Board of Trustees approved seven retiring faculty members for emeritus status at its June 24 board meeting. Also announced at the end of the academic year were tenure and promotion decisions for faculty members.

The seven retiring faculty members have contributed a combined total of more than 150 years of service, according to Provost Adrienne McCormick.

They are: Gary Alderman, professor of psychology; Siobhan Brownson, professor of English; Letha Maxton-Kershaw, associate professor of psychology; Lou Pantuosco, professor of economics; Padmini Patwardhan, professor of mass communication; Don Rakestraw, professor of history and department chair; and Jennie Rakestraw, professor of education and dean of the Richard W. Riley College of Education.

The Board of Trustees earlier acknowledged tenure and promotion decisions taking effect in August as presented by the Division of Academic Affairs.

The four faculty members granted tenure are: in the College of Arts and Sciences, Duha Hamed, math; in the Richard W. Riley College of Education, Jared Androzzi, physical education; and in the College of Visual and Performing Arts, Jeremy Mims, music, and Karen Oremus, fine arts.

The eight faculty members promoted to professor are: in the College of Arts and Sciences, Kristen Abernathy, math; Eric Birgbauer, biology; Casey Cothran, English; and Kunsiri Chaw Grubbs, biology; in the College of Business Administration, Adriana Cordis, accounting; and Philip Gibson, finance; in the College of Education, Jared Androzzi, physical education, and Joy Stapleton, elementary education.

Promoted to the rank of associate professor from assistant professor are five faculty members: in the College of Arts and Sciences, Victoria Frost, biology, and Ephraim Sommers, English; for the College of Education, Alice McLaine, athletic training; and for the College of Visual and Performing Arts, Jeremy Mims, music, and Kelly Ozust, dance.
